Most delays with structural steel come from the order, not the steel. A missing length, an unclear finish or a delivery truck that cannot get in all cost time on site. This checklist covers what a supplier needs to quote and cut your steel correctly the first time.
1. The engineer’s schedule or drawings
Send the member schedule or the relevant drawings, not just a list of sizes. The schedule shows the section, grade and length of each member and any holes, plates or connections, which is what the steel has to match.
2. Every length and quantity
List each member with its cut length and how many you need. Say whether lengths are exact or include allowance for trimming on site.
3. The finish
State whether each item is raw, primed or galvanised, and whether any fabrication (holes, cleats, base plates) happens before or after coating.
4. Fabrication details
If members need drilling, welding or plates, include the connection details from the drawings. Hole sizes and positions are much easier to get right in the workshop than on site.
5. Timing
Tell us when the trades are ready for the steel. Steel that arrives on the day it is needed is less likely to be damaged or in the way.
6. Delivery access
Give the site address and flag anything that limits delivery: narrow streets, steep driveways, overhead wires, or where the steel needs to be dropped.
7. Contact on the day
Name the person on site the driver should call, with a mobile number.
